Aural Rehabilitation Services

Overview of Aural Rehab

Aural rehabilitation is a service provided for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. This service can be provided to people of all ages, ranging from birth through adulthood.  At the birth-five year old age group, the focus of services is gaining language and/or speech skills.  The language can include sign language or can be focused on an oral language.  At this time, the child is also learning how to use the residual hearing he/she may have with the use of 1-2 hearing aids, a cochlear implant, or their ears alone.  As the child continues to grow, teaching the small nuances of language is incorporated into the services.  Idioms and figurative language become a focus, as well as continuing to develop the vocabulary.  Articulation may also be an area of focus if speech is desired.  Lipreading, or speech reading, is also focused on as well as other compensatory strategies.  In teenage and adult years, the focus of services changes to assisting in areas of need in the world around the individual.  This may include how to act at an interview, writing skills when applying for a job or college, as well as how to ask for services that should be provided such as additional hearing benefits like an FM system, or an interpreter.  Articulation and compensatory strategies are also an area of focus as desired by each individual.
